Austin Places 23rd in Race 2 of Camping World Truck Series

Pit Road Incidents Highlight Austin's Day

2.21.09 - Race 2 Report - Fontana, CA. – Unlike his debut last week at the Daytona International Speedway, which saw Chase Austin avoid numerous on-track accidents, this weekend at the San Bernadino County 200 at Auto Club Speedway in Fontana, CA, Chase got caught up in two pit-road incidents which placed him three laps down in 23rd position at the finish.

After starting the race in 24th position, Austin settled into 22nd for most of the first half of the event. During his first scheduled pit stop of the race, during the caution flag, Austin was broad-sided by Taylor Malsom, driving the #81 Toyota. Malsom's crew chief made a rookie mistake by sending his driver out from the pits as Austin was attempting to turn into his pit just ahead of the #81 Truck. The contact turned Austin's Truck sideways and placed him a lap down by the time his crew completed the stop. Mike Skinner had caused the yellow flag when he ran into the back of the #16 truck, causing it to pound the outside wall on the main straightaway. Skinner later caused Austin next mishap.

Chase settled back into the event running in about the same postion until his next and fateful pit road incident. Mike Skinner, who was running among the leaders, was racing out of his pit trying to stay in the lead group, when he cut-off Austin, who was attempting to get into his pit. This incident caused Chase to miss his pit, go back out onto the track and complete another lap before completing his stop.

Chase soldiered on in the event, settling into the 23rd position at the finish.
