2012 Indycar Series Concept Cars hold key to Promising Future?
03.15.10 - irv.can - A funny thing happened on the way to thefuture of Indycar racing, The plot just got thicker. No less than five chassis manufacturer's, have submitted drawings and proposals to the league for the upcoming chassis changeover in 2012.
IZOD Indycar Series stalwarts such as Dallara and Lola were joined by newcomers Swift Engineering, Bat Engineering and the Most radical designs of all by Deltawing, LLC.
It's promising to see so many firms interested in designing the next generation of the Indycar. This telsl me that interest in the series is growing and the stakeholders are as diverse as the driver lineup. I'll be honest, I'm an Indycar purist, and I like what I see from these potential manufacturer's with the exception of the Delta Wing design.
Because I'm a lifelong fan of the series (40+ years), I've always liked seeing the evolution of the Indycar, and to me the Deltawing design seems to skip a generation or two. Looking back through the years, the Indycar chassis has always seemed to have borowed from the past with eyes toward the future. After studying these new designs, in my opinion, the clear winner is the Dallara design.
This design flows from the past, to the present, to the future. Their bright red design especially encompasses these features. Its front wings are reminiscent of the 70's, its fully enclosed body design recalls the early 80's and new rear wing design, points toward the future. Overall the design flows from today's Indycar to Tomorrow's Indycar.
I can't begin to know which chassis the IRL will choose as the next design of the Series, but with this many choices and the great deal of interest it has sparked, I can only believe that the IZOD Indycar series is on the right path for the future of Open-wheel racing.
